Work starts on Rowville's new era

Tuesday, 12 March 2013

The first sod has been turned on a new era of firefighting for the Rowville community, marking the beginning of construction on a new $5.5m fire station.

The station is being built on a 6000 m² site at the corner of Wellington Road and Le John Street, Rowville.

The milestone was reached as Rowville CFA welcomed 4 career firefighters starting a day shift supporting the brigades 55 operational volunteers.

The development is funded by the Victorian Government’s $60.4 million Project 2016, to meet increased demands on volunteer brigades in urban growth corridors.

Eastern Metropolitan Regional Director Dave Baker said the new station would ensure the best level of service for the areas 35 thousand residents now and long into the future.

“This is an important milestone for Rowville which has seen significant growth over the past 2 decades. The brigade now responds to around 300 incidents a year,” Mr Baker said.

“To keep up with these growing demands, CFA needs to change the way it protects life and property in Rowville.”

He said while career firefighters would be important to improving response times, volunteers would always be at the core of the brigade.

“Rowville has a proud history as a volunteer brigade, dating back more than 70 years. This new era will see volunteers and career firefighters serving side by side.”

He said the site’s access to the main thoroughfare together with its size and location would ensure incidents would be responded to in the shortest possible time.

The development will include accommodation for 6 staff, a 4 bay drive through motor room, a meeting room, staff dayroom, brigade offices, training yard and car park.

Mr Baker also thanked neighbours and Knox Council who CFA had worked closely with in planning the new fire station.

Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks with fire trucks hoped to be rolling out of the new station by the end of the year.
