CFA Volunteers form guard of honour

CFA volunteers formed a guard of honour at the opening ceremony of the National Special Olympic Games on Monday (20 October) at Lakeside Stadium at Albert Park.

The national games, now in its 10th year, sees 1000 athletes with an intellectual disability compete for one week in 16 sports including aquatics, athletics, basketball, golf, tennis and gymnastics.

Two CFA volunteers, Lee McGregor from Hoppers Crossing and Dave Rawson of Rowville, led the athlete parade through the Albert Park arena, carrying state and territory name plates.

CFA volunteers Tim Maloney and Monique Abbott of Truganina, Paul Doherty of Point Cook and Graeme Lovett of Hallam formed a guard of honour for the Olympic torch to pass through.

Lee, who was a sign carrier for Victoria, said it was an honour to represent CFA at the event.

“It was really great; all the kids were rapt,” he said.

“I was proud to hold the sign for Victoria and represent CFA.”

Members of MFB, Ambulance Victoria, DEPI and SES also took part in opening ceremony celebrations.
