Arrests over Rowville primary school blaze

14th January 2010

A 13-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl have been arrested after a Rowville school was set alight last night, causing $300,000 in damage.

The teenagers are both from Rowville. Parents and students of Heany Park Primary School looked on in shock as two portable classrooms were completely destroyed and another seriously damaged by the flames.

Rowville CFA Captain John Farrer said eight crews from Rowville, Bayswater and Scoresby arrived just after 11pm to find the flames six metres high.

He said the fire had been started inside a door, but did not reach nearby computers.

“It took us half an hour to get it under control and an hour to have it extinguished,” Captain Farrer said.

Knox Sen-Sgt Neil White said about $300,000 damage had been caused in the blaze.

Parent Nella Santomaggio, who lives two doors from the school, said she was startled by an “explosion” just before 11pm, and ran outside.

“All we heard was the shattering of glass,” Mrs Santomaggio said.

“It was like an inferno,” said her husband Tony.

Principal David Rose said he was hopeful the new classrooms would be installed before the school’s 700 students returned on February 1.
